SRB2 Level Editing Made Easy
What to Study Next
You've learned a lot from this guide, and you can now make excellent
levels. Here are a few topics you should study next:
- Map headers. Map headers
allow you to change your level's title, music, sky, game types
supported, and more. A howto on making map headers can be found in the
Editing Help section of SRB2 World.
- New types of 3D blocks.
Now that you know how to make water blocks and FOF blocks, there are
plenty of cool effects you can do without having too much more to
learn. There are translucent 3D blocks (good for windows), invisible
and intangible blocks (useful for combining effects), light blocks, fog
blocks, and much more.
- Directional effects.
Wind, conveyor belts, and currents can do quite a bit to liven up your
maps. They all work pretty much the same.
- How to make good layouts.
This guide has taught you the technical aspects of level making. Good
levels need to have layouts that are interesting and balanced. If
you're making a single player level, you don't want it to be too
linear, or it'll have virtually no replay value, but then you don't
want to make it confusing. If you're making a battle level, you should
make sure the special weapons aren't too easy to access, and try to
lure people out in the center of the level to get them, so there will
be more confrontations. Mystic is working on a guide to cover these
aspects of level design.
Check out the Effects Guide for information about conveyor belts and
special 3D blocks. It can be found in the Editing Help section of SRB2 World. If you need
help, you can contact me by e-mail (a441 at-sign prontomail period com)
or find someone to help you in #srb2fun on irc2.mysteria.net. Thanks
for reading, and do enjoy the level making!
